Stamford Alternator Repairs, AVR Replacement and Winding Tests

We repair Stamford alternators on site across Gauteng: AVR faults and replacements, rotating diodes, bearings and winding insulation. When a set with a Stamford alternator gives no voltage, the wrong voltage or unstable voltage, we test the alternator and AVR at the terminals and fix the cause. If the windings have failed, we arrange the rewind.

Before we start

Finding the alternator, its nameplate and the AVR

The alternator is the round machine bolted to the back of the engine. On most Stamford machines the AVR sits in the terminal box, and the nameplate on the housing gives the frame and winding details. Many builders fit Stamford alternators, Cummins among them, so the set often carries a different name. The photo shows this type of installation, not a Stamford machine in particular.

Two details decide which parts fit and how the repair is done:

  • The AVR model, and whether a PMG is fitted
  • A single-bearing or two-bearing build

Stamford AVRs and what powers each one

Stamford AVRs and what powers each one
AVRPowered byWhat to know
SX460Powered byThe main stator output (self-excited)What to knowOlder and smaller machines; replace only with a unit designed to substitute for it
AS440Powered byThe main stator output (self-excited)What to knowWidely used, with adjustable voltage, stability and under-frequency roll-off
MX341Powered byA permanent magnet generator (PMG)What to knowNeeds the PMG supply, so it cannot run a self-excited machine
MX321Powered byA PMGWhat to knowLarger machines; three-phase sensing and over-excitation protection

The model on the AVR decides what replaces it. The wrong AVR, or one wired wrongly, can destroy itself or the exciter.

Self-excited or PMG: what changes in a repair

A self-excited Stamford alternator powers its AVR from its own output and depends on residual magnetism in the exciter to start building voltage. That magnetism can be lost after a fault or long storage, leaving no output. Flashing the field restores it, but it will not help if a failed diode, AVR or winding is the real cause, so those are tested first.

A PMG machine has a small permanent magnet generator at the non-drive end of the shaft, which powers the AVR whatever the output voltage is doing. It holds excitation through motor starting and short circuits, so it suits sets running pumps, compressors and lifts. With no PMG output the AVR has no supply, so we measure the PMG before blaming the AVR.

Stamford voltage faults and where we look first

We measure at the alternator terminals first. If the voltage there is healthy but the building has no power, the fault is further on, in the output breaker or the changeover or ATS.

AVR replacement

Replacing a Stamford AVR without a repeat failure

  1. 01

    Identify

The AVR model, nameplate and wiring show the excitation type and how the sensing is connected.

  2. 02

    Test what it drives

Exciter field, rotating diodes, surge suppressor and main rotor, because a hidden fault kills a new AVR.

  3. 03

    Fit and wire

The same model, or one designed to replace it, with supply, sensing and field leads on the correct terminals.

  4. 04

    Prove it on load

Voltage, stability and roll-off set at rated speed, then a run on real load, or a load bank where arranged.

Beyond the AVR

Bearings, insulation and windings

  • Single-bearing builds

Many have one bearing at the non-drive end, with the rotor bolted to the flywheel through flexible discs. Bearing noise, heat or a cracked disc needs attention before the rotor touches the stator.

  • Moisture and insulation

A standby set idle through a wet Highveld summer can take moisture into its windings. An insulation resistance test shows whether drying out is enough.

  • Terminal connections

Loose links, sensing leads and lugs make voltage unstable and burn terminals, so we check them at every service.

  • Rewinding: Generator rewinding

If a winding has burnt, we remove the alternator or failed part, arrange the rewind and refit it.

Independent service

We Service & Repair All Generator Brands

Onsite Generator Repairs is an independent generator specialist. We repair, service and maintain Stamford equipment as part of our work on every make of generator.

Manufacturer warranty claims go through the manufacturer’s own network. If your generator is still under warranty, check the warranty terms before arranging work by anyone else.

Brand names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Onsite Generator Repairs is an independent service and repair company.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

My generator runs but has no voltage. Is it the AVR?

Not always. Lost residual magnetism, a PMG fault, failed diodes or a tripped breaker look the same. See running but no power.

Can I replace an SX460 with any AVR?

Only with one designed to replace it, wired for the same excitation and sensing. Our AVR guide explains why.

What should I send before you come out?

The set’s make, model and kVA, a photo of the alternator nameplate, any controller alarm, and what the voltage did. If the nameplate says Leroy-Somer or Mecc Alte instead, the same details help.

Is a Stamford alternator worth rewinding?

Often, especially on larger machines. It depends on the condition of the core, rotor and bearings. See generator rewinding.
