Volvo Penta TAD Genset Engines Repaired and Serviced on Site
We repair and service Volvo Penta engines in generator sets on site across Gauteng. Most are TAD-series turbocharged, aftercooled diesels with electronic engine management, fitted to mid-sized and large standby and prime-power sets by SDMO and other builders. We trace engine alarms to the sensor, wiring or system at fault, and service each engine with parts matched to its model and serial number.

Reading a Volvo Penta model name
Volvo Penta generator engines carry names such as TAD734GE or TAD1641GE. T stands for turbocharged, A for air-to-air aftercooling and D for diesel; a W in place of the A, as in TWD, means the charge air is cooled by water. The GE suffix marks a version built for generator duty.
The first one or two digits give the swept volume in litres, so a TAD7 engine is about 7 litres and a TAD16 about 16, and the digits after that identify the generation and version. Engines that look alike can need different filters, sensors and settings, so we work from the model and serial number on the engine plate, not from the set’s nameplate alone.
You will find these engines in SDMO sets and in sets from other builders, paired with an alternator such as Leroy-Somer, Stamford or Mecc Alte.
Diagnosis
How we trace an alarm on a Volvo Penta engine
- 01
Read the set controller
Most modern set controllers read the engine control unit over a CAN (J1939) data link and display the faults it reports. We record them before anything is reset.
- 02
Rule out what the alarm depends on
Low coolant, a slipping belt, a blocked air filter, poor fuel supply or a weak battery can all raise engine alarms, and they are quick to check.
- 03
Test the circuit
The sensor, its connector and the harness back to the engine control unit are tested. Corroded pins and chafed wiring cause many alarms that look like a failed sensor.
- 04
Repair, clear and prove
The fault is cleared and the set run, under load where possible, to confirm the alarm stays away.
What the T and A in TAD mean for upkeep
The T and A in TAD are where much of the engine’s power comes from. The turbocharger packs air into the cylinders, and the charge-air cooler, a radiator for the intake air usually mounted alongside the coolant radiator, cools that air so the engine can burn more fuel cleanly.
A split hose or loose clamp between turbocharger and engine lets boost escape, so the engine smokes and struggles to take load. A charge-air cooler packed with dust raises intake temperature, and the engine control unit may reduce power to protect the engine. Both are checked at every service.

Wear points
What wears on Volvo Penta generator engines
Fuel and water separation: Fuel system repairs
Electronically controlled injection works at very high pressure and does not tolerate water or dirt, so separators are drained and filters changed on schedule.
Coolant type: Coolant and radiator care
Volvo Penta specifies its own coolant types for different engine generations. Mixing them weakens corrosion protection and can form deposits, so top-ups match what is in the engine.
Sensors and connectors: Shutting down or tripping
Heat, damp and vibration work on connectors. One intermittent sensor can stop a healthy engine, so connectors are inspected at each service.
Belts and tensioners: Overheating
Tensioners and pulley bearings wear along with the belt. A squeal on start-up is the warning; a broken fan belt leads to overheating within minutes.
Speed and frequency: Surging and hunting
Speed is set electronically, so hunting or the wrong frequency usually points to a setting, a speed signal or fuel supply rather than a worn mechanical governor.
Battery voltage when cranking: Battery not charging
The engine control unit needs a steady supply while the starter turns. A weak battery can make it drop out, so the engine cranks but never starts.
A Volvo Penta engine service covers
Intervals come from the engine’s operator’s manual, by running hours or by time, whichever comes first.
- Engine oil and filters, to the grade the engine specifies
- Primary fuel filter, water separator and secondary fuel filter
- Air filter, charge-air cooler and pipework
- Coolant level, strength and type; radiator and hoses
- Drive belts, tensioner and pulleys
- Engine faults shown on the set controller read, recorded and cleared once repaired
- Battery, charger and charging alternator
- A test run with oil pressure, temperatures, voltage and frequency recorded
Parts are identified from the engine’s model and serial number: genuine Volvo Penta parts or quality equivalents that meet its specification. For regular checks between services, see generator maintenance; for a fault now, see generator repairs.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which generators use Volvo Penta engines?
SDMO and Kohler-SDMO fitted them to many sets, alongside engines from makers such as John Deere, and other builders use them too. Look for TAD or TWD on the engine plate. The engine is serviced the same way whichever set it is in.
My set shows an engine fault but still runs. Should I keep using it?
Note the alarm and call us. During load shedding it is tempting to leave it running, but some faults are warnings that let the engine run, sometimes at reduced power, while others will soon stop it. Reading the fault tells us which.
Can I top up with any coolant?
No. Top up with the coolant type already in the engine, or the one the engine specifies, and only when the engine is cold. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the expansion tank.
