A business town between two cities
Centurion grew out of the old town of Lyttelton, was known for a time as Verwoerdburg, and is now part of the City of Tshwane. Its position between Johannesburg and Pretoria, on the N1 with the N14 and R21 close by, drew head offices, technology firms and logistics businesses, and the business parks around Centurion Lake, Highveld and Samrand followed. Housing grew alongside them: older homes in Lyttelton, family suburbs to the west, and security estates and complexes to the south and east.
So Centurion’s generators range from large standby sets behind server rooms to a small inverter unit in a townhouse garage. Depending on the suburb, the supply is municipal or comes directly from Eskom, so load-shedding schedules can differ from one side of town to the other. It is the longer, unplanned outages after cable theft, substation faults or a Highveld thunderstorm that most often catch a neglected generator out.
Centurion is part of our Pretoria and Centurion region, with Midrand across the boundary to the south. Whatever the site, the work is the same: generator repairs when something fails, servicing at the engine maker’s intervals, and maintenance plans for sets that are not allowed to fail.
Business parks
Office parks, server rooms and the building generator
Many Centurion offices run server rooms and UPS systems that rely on the building generator taking over within seconds. If the UPS rejects the generator’s power because voltage or frequency wanders as load steps on, the batteries run down and the systems shut down anyway, with the engine still running.
In a multi-tenant park the set is often shared, and nobody is quite sure who looks after it. Agree who books the service, who keeps the fuel topped up and who is told before the changeover is tested. After hours, a set sized for the whole building may carry only security lights and a server rack, and a diesel engine run that lightly never gets hot enough to burn its fuel completely: wet stacking.
A test on load, alongside a simulated mains failure arranged with the building manager, shows whether the whole chain works: generator, changeover and UPS. We also repair the controllers, AVRs and changeover panels behind many transfer problems.
- Work scheduled outside office hours where needed

Homes, estates and workshops
What we find across Centurion
Home standby in Irene and the eastern estates: Standby generators
Larger homes in Irene, Doringkloof and the estates near the R21 often have a silent diesel or gas standby set with an automatic changeover. The usual problems are a flat starting battery, a failed battery charger or a changeover that has not been exercised for months.
Eldoraigne, Wierdapark and Rooihuiskraal: Portable and inverter generators
Family homes with petrol and inverter generators, or small silent diesel sets, wired through a changeover switch. A petrol unit left standing with stale fuel in the carburettor is the classic one that will not start when the lights go out.
Complexes and shared estate sets: Residential generator services
Body corporates and homeowners’ associations run generators for gate motors, guardhouses, street lights and water pumps. They run through every outage, so hours build up quickly and services can fall due well before the calendar says so.
Hennopspark workshops: Industrial generator services
Workshops, warehouses and small factories start compressors, welders and machinery, so the set needs headroom for motor starting current, not just the running load. On a three-phase set, single-phase loads such as lighting and sockets should also be spread evenly across the phases.
Booking a visit inside an estate or complex
Estate rules decide when and how contractors work, so a little preparation saves a wasted trip.
- Arrange a gate pass or contractor access for the technician, and tell security when to expect us.
- Check the estate’s rules on noise and running times: a test on load can take a while.
- Note where the set stands (side passage, alcove, garage or roof) and whether a vehicle can get close.
- Send the make, model and kVA, the hour-meter reading and a photo of the controller screen or any alarm.
- Say what the generator powers, such as a gate motor, a borehole pump or the whole house, so we can check it copes.
- For a shared set, tell us who approves the quotation: the trustees, the managing agent or the HOA.
Midstream, between Centurion and Midrand, and the estates along the R21 are covered the same way.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do you work in the business parks in Highveld, the CBD and Samrand?
Yes. We arrange access with building or park management, follow any induction or permit to work, and can schedule work outside office hours so tenants are not disrupted.
Our UPS stays on battery when the generator runs. Why?
The UPS is rejecting the generator’s output, usually because the frequency or voltage moves outside its limits as load changes. Common causes are a governor or actuator fault, an AVR problem or a set too small for the load. See frequency and speed problems.
Do you cover Irene and the security estates?
Yes. Let us know the estate’s contractor access rules and any limits on test-run times when you book.
Who looks after a generator shared by a complex?
Usually the body corporate or HOA, through its managing agent. We quote them for the service or repair, and the set gets its own schedule based on running hours as well as dates. See generator maintenance.
Which parts of Centurion do you cover?
All of it, from Lyttelton and Pierre van Ryneveld to Eldoraigne, Rooihuiskraal, Hennopspark and Olievenhoutbosch, as well as Pretoria and the rest of the City of Tshwane. Free callouts and quotations.
