Ryobi Petrol Generators Repaired and Serviced On Site

We repair and service Ryobi generators at homes and small businesses across Gauteng, mainly the open-frame petrol models sold through hardware and DIY stores, such as the RG-7900K. Most faults are worth fixing: a varnished carburettor, a worn pull start, a low-oil shutdown, or a failed AVR when the engine runs but the sockets are dead. We come to you, so there is no heavy generator to load into a car.

Reading the panel on a Ryobi RG-7900K

The RG-7900K pictured on this page carries a 6800 W rating, an AVR label, a digital meter, a circuit breaker and AC sockets. The AVR (automatic voltage regulator) varies the current to the alternator’s rotor so the socket voltage stays near 230 V as the load changes. When it fails, the engine runs normally while the output collapses or swings.

The breaker protects the alternator. If it trips, unplug something before resetting it; if it trips with almost nothing connected, suspect a damaged lead or appliance, or an alternator fault. Where the meter shows voltage and frequency, note the readings when you call: low voltage at light load, or a frequency far from 50 Hz, tells the technician where to start.

Where most Ryobi faults start

Like most petrol generators, Ryobi units tend to be bought for occasional use, then pressed into daily service when load shedding returns. Long storage leaves varnish in the carburettor, a fouled spark plug and a pull cord meeting an engine that will not fire. Heavy use brings the opposite: oil runs low and the low-oil switch stops the engine, brushes wear, heat takes its toll on the AVR, and the air filter clogs, especially on a dirt yard like the one below.

Overload is the other common thread. A 6800 W rating sounds generous, but heating loads such as a geyser, stove plate or kettle each take a large share of it, and a borehole pump draws several times its running current as it starts. Repeated overload trips the breaker and, over time, overheats the AVR and windings. Size the load first with the kVA sizing guide.

Repairs

Ryobi generator repairs we do most

  • Carburettor varnish: Generator not starting

Hard starting, or running only on choke, after months of standing. We clean the jets and float bowl, or fit a new carburettor.

  • Dead sockets: Running but no power

Engine running but no power: a tripped breaker, worn brushes, a failed AVR, or lost residual magnetism in the alternator.

  • Surging or wrong frequency: Surging and hunting

A partly blocked jet, an air leak at the carburettor, or a governor linkage out of adjustment.

  • Pull-start and recoil faults

Frayed or snapped cords, tired recoil springs and worn pawls; most recoil starters can be repaired.

  • Low-oil shutdown

If it stops with the set level and the oil at the mark, the low-oil switch or its wiring may be earthing the ignition. We test it; it is never bypassed.

  • Ignition

A sooty or worn spark plug, a weak coil, or a fault in the engine stop switch.

Running a Ryobi through load shedding

The photo shows plugs in a Ryobi’s own sockets. Leads run from those sockets straight to appliances are the simplest safe set-up during load shedding. Stand the set on firm ground in the open, use correctly rated, undamaged leads, and let the engine cool before refuelling between slots.

Servicing a Ryobi open-frame generator

At the hours in the owner’s manual; heavy load-shedding use reaches them quickly. More in generator servicing.
  1. 01

    Oil

Changed after the running-in hours of a new unit, then by hours. If the meter counts running hours, use it.

  2. 02

    Air filter and plug

The element cleaned or replaced, sooner in dust; the plug read, gapped or replaced.

  3. 03

    Fuel

Fuel tap strainer and carburettor bowl checked for varnish and water.

  4. 04

    Alternator and output

Brushes and slip rings inspected, then voltage and frequency measured with and without load.

Is a Ryobi worth repairing?

We identify parts from the model plate and the engine label, and fit genuine or quality-equivalent carburettors, recoil starters, low-oil switches, AVRs and brushes, telling you which. Fuel, starting and AVR repairs are usually worth doing. If the engine has seized from running without oil, or the windings have burnt out, compare the quote with a new unit: see repair or replace. If the loads are light and you are replacing anyway, a quieter inverter unit may suit better: compare portable and inverter generators.

Other open-frame petrol generators common in South African homes, such as Lutian and Mac Afric, are built on similar lines and repaired the same way; for a Honda-engined set, see Honda generator repairs. To book, start at generator repairs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can my Ryobi generator run my whole house?

Usually not. A 6800 W unit can carry lights, fridges, TVs, Wi-Fi and some smaller appliances, but not a geyser, stove and kettle together. See the kVA sizing guide.

Why does my Ryobi trip when the borehole pump starts?

A pump motor draws a surge several times its running current as it starts. With other loads already on, that surge can exceed the rating. Start the pump first, then add the rest.
