Repairs and Servicing for Perkins-Powered Generators
We repair and service Perkins diesel engines on site across Gauteng, whoever built the generator around them: FG Wilson or one of the many independent set builders that use Perkins power. That runs from the small 400 series in home standby units to the large 4000 series behind hospitals and factories, with parts matched to the number on the engine’s data plate.

Older sets often carry the 1000 series (1004, 1006), which the 1100 series replaced, and you may also meet the electronically injected 1300 series on mid-sized sets. In most Perkins model numbers the last digits give the cylinder count, so a 1104 has four cylinders and a 4012 twelve.
One engine, many set builders
Perkins builds engines, not complete generators. FG Wilson, which Caterpillar also owns, fits Perkins engines to most of its diesel sets, and many independent builders in South Africa and abroad do the same, adding their own alternator, controller and canopy.
So the engine is serviced to its Perkins schedule, while the rest of the set depends on who built it: a Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternator, a Deep Sea or ComAp controller, or a PowerWizard panel on an FG Wilson set. We work on all of it in one visit. Perkins and Caterpillar engines share some design, but parts are not always interchangeable, so we order by the Perkins engine’s own number.
Common faults
What we find on Perkins-powered sets
Fuel stop solenoid: Generator not starting
Many Perkins-engined sets stop by cutting fuel with a solenoid on the injection pump. If it or its supply fails, the engine cranks but never fires; if it sticks, the engine will not stop.
Glow plugs and cold starts: Smoke
Many 400-series engines rely on glow plugs. On a cold Highveld morning, a failed plug or relay shows as long cranking and white smoke.
Water pumps and coolant: Overheating
Water pump seals and hoses wear, and coolant that is never changed stops protecting the engine. A weep from the pump’s tell-tale hole is an early warning.
Oil leaks and oil use: Leaks
Rocker cover gaskets, sump seals, oil cooler joints and turbocharger oil lines weep with age. Left alone, a slow loss ends in a low oil pressure shutdown.
Light loads and wet stacking: Wet stacking
An 1100 or 2000-series set sized well above the load it carries never reaches full working temperature. Unburnt fuel and soot show as black, oily dribble at the exhaust joints.
Holding 50 Hz: Surging and hunting
Smaller Perkins engines use a mechanical governor in the injection pump; larger ones often an electronic governor and actuator. Both need setting to hold frequency as load changes.
What gets changed and checked on a Perkins service
Perkins engines are serviced by running hours or by time, whichever comes first, at the intervals in the engine’s operation and maintenance manual. Months of heavy load shedding can bring the hours interval round well before the date.
- Engine oil and filter, to the grade for the engine number
- Fuel filters and water separator, drained and bled
- Air filter and restriction indicator
- Coolant strength, radiator core, hoses and water pump
- Belts, the fuel stop solenoid and glow plugs or intake heater
- Battery, charger and charging alternator
- A test run recording oil pressure, temperature, voltage and frequency
A maintenance plan adds test runs between services, which suits standby sets that sit idle until the power fails.

Parts and major repairs
We identify each part from the engine data plate and serial number and fit genuine Perkins parts or quality equivalents that meet the engine’s specification. Parts for older engines can take longer, and we say so before work is booked. Major work, such as an injection pump overhaul or a rebuild, is quoted against the cost of replacement; our repair or replace guide explains the trade-off.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is a Perkins engine in an FG Wilson set serviced differently?
No. The engine is serviced to its own Perkins schedule. The parts FG Wilson chose for the rest of the set, the controller, alternator, canopy and base tank, are checked on the same visit.
Why does my small Perkins-engined set start badly in winter?
Usually weak glow plugs, a tired battery or diesel that has stood too long. Cold mornings show these faults first. See generator not starting for the checks that are safe for you to do.
Where do I find my Perkins engine number?
On a plate or label on the engine, often on the side of the cylinder block or on the rocker cover. A clear photo of it is enough.
