Questions

Callouts and response

What happens between your call and a technician arriving.

How quickly will a technician reach me?

We arrive within 1–2 hours, usually within 1 hour. Tell us where the generator is when you call so we can say when to expect the technician. If it failed during an outage, our emergency generator repair page explains what is safe to do while you wait.

Do you work at night, over weekends and on public holidays?

Yes. We operate 24/7, every day of the year, so you can call at 2 a.m. on a Sunday as readily as on a Tuesday morning. Call or WhatsApp 076 434 7292.

What should I tell you when I call?

Where the generator is, its make, model and kVA rating from the nameplate, and what it is doing: not starting, running without power, showing an alarm, smoking or leaking. An hour-meter reading and a photo of the controller screen help a lot; the photo gallery shows the labels and screens worth photographing. Our guide to preparing for a technician visit lists the rest.

What can I check safely before the technician arrives?

Check the fuel level, that the emergency stop is not pressed in, that the controller is in automatic mode and whether the output breaker has tripped. With the set isolated, look for loose or corroded battery terminals and for leaks you can see from outside. Leave panels, wiring, fuel lines and the changeover to us, and stop cranking after a few failed attempts. See generator not starting.

How do I book a callout or a service?

Call or WhatsApp 076 434 7292, email info@onsitegeneratorrepairs.co.za, or send the form on our contact page. Routine servicing is booked for a time that suits you; a breakdown is treated as urgent.

What happens to the details I send you?

We use them to reply to your enquiry and to arrange and record the work. Our privacy policy explains what we keep, why, for how long and how to ask us to correct or delete it.

Questions

Repairs

The faults we are asked about most, and where each one is covered in depth.

Why won’t my generator start?

Most no-start faults come down to the battery or its charger, fuel (an empty tank, blocked filters or air in the lines after running dry), an emergency stop left pressed, the controller left in off or manual, or a shutdown alarm that has not been reset. Smaller diesels that rely on glow plugs also start badly on cold Highveld mornings when a plug fails. Stop after a few attempts so the starter motor does not overheat. More in generator not starting.

The engine runs, but there is no power. What is wrong?

First check whether the generator’s output breaker has tripped. If it has not and the generator’s meter or controller screen shows no output voltage, the usual suspects are the AVR, the exciter or its rotating diodes, or residual magnetism lost after the set stood unused for a long time. If the meter shows normal voltage but the building is still dead, the fault is more likely in the changeover. See running but no power, AVR repairs and changeover and ATS problems.

Why does my generator shut down or trip when the load comes on?

Either the protection is doing its job or the engine cannot keep up. Overload, low oil pressure, high coolant temperature and over- or under-speed all trigger a protective trip or shutdown, and a fuel supply that cannot keep up under load usually shows as under-speed or a stall. The controller normally shows which alarm caused it. Note the alarm before resetting it, then see shutting down or tripping and the controller alarms guide.

Is it safe to keep running a generator that is smoking, leaking or overheating?

No. A brief puff of smoke at start-up can be normal, but persistent smoke, a fuel or coolant leak or a high-temperature alarm is not. Stop the generator (on an automatic set, switch the controller to off rather than auto so it cannot restart), keep people and anything that could ignite away from spilt fuel, and let it cool before anyone looks at it. Running on can turn a split hose or a failed gasket into an engine rebuild. Our guides to smoke, leaks and overheating explain what each sign means.

Do you repair generators on site?

Yes, in most cases. Batteries, chargers, filters, AVRs, controllers, starter motors, sensors and fuel-system faults are normally dealt with where the generator stands. Work such as rewinding an alternator or reconditioning an injection pump needs bench work away from site, and the quotation tells you before anything is removed. See generator repairs.

Is my old generator worth repairing?

Usually, if the engine and alternator are sound and parts can still be found. A seized engine, badly worn bearings or windings that have failed more than once can make a rebuild cost more than a replacement. We set out both options; our repair or replace guide puts the questions in order.

Questions

Servicing and maintenance

Routine care that keeps a generator ready, and how often it is needed.

What is the difference between repairs, servicing and maintenance?

Repairs fix a fault. Servicing is scheduled routine work: oil, filters, fluids, checks and a test run. Maintenance is the ongoing programme of services, inspections and test runs that keeps a generator ready.

How often should my generator be serviced?

At the running-hours interval in the engine manufacturer’s schedule, or once a year, whichever comes first. A standby set that only runs on test reaches the yearly date first; one that runs through load shedding most days can reach its hours interval within weeks. See service intervals and oil care.

My generator hardly ever runs. Does it still need servicing?

Yes. Oil and coolant age in the engine, batteries self-discharge, rubber hoses perish and stored diesel picks up water whether the set runs or not. A standby generator left for a year without attention is the one most likely to let you down when the power goes. See standby generators.

What does a generator service include?

A typical service replaces the engine oil and the oil, fuel and air filters, drains water from the fuel separator, checks coolant, belts, hoses, the battery and the charger, reads the controller’s alarm history and ends with a test run, under load where possible. The exact list depends on the engine: the service checklist shows it item by item, and generator servicing explains how we do it.

Do you offer maintenance plans?

Yes. For homes, estates, businesses and industrial sites we agree a schedule of services, inspections and test runs for each generator, timed by its running hours and the calendar. See generator maintenance.

Why should a generator be tested under load?

A no-load run proves the engine starts, not that it can carry your load. Diesel sets that run lightly for long periods also suffer from wet stacking, where unburnt fuel and soot collect in the exhaust. A run on the building’s own load, or on a load bank, shows whether the set holds its voltage and frequency at the load it will meet in an outage.

Questions

Load shedding and outages

How generators cope with load shedding and power cuts, and what tends to go wrong.

How should I look after my generator during load shedding?

Treat the hour meter as your service calendar, because back-to-back outages add hours quickly. Keep the tank topped up from clean containers, check the oil and coolant with the engine cold, and keep the canopy and radiator clear so the set can cool. If the battery cranks slowly between outages, have the charger checked: see battery not charging and generator maintenance.

Why didn’t my generator start when the power went off?

An automatic start needs every link in the chain: a charged battery and a working charger, fuel, the controller left in auto, and mains sensing that sees the failure. A fault anywhere stops the set taking over. There is also a deliberate start delay of a few seconds, so that brief dips do not start the engine. See changeover and ATS problems.

Why does the generator keep running after the power comes back?

For a few minutes that is normal. The controller waits to be sure the mains is stable, transfers the load back, then runs the engine unloaded to cool down before it stops. If it never hands the load back, or never stops, the mains sensing, the controller settings or the changeover need attention: see control panel repairs. The diagram below shows the full sequence.

Is it safe to power my home from a portable generator during load shedding?

Yes, if it is done properly. Plug appliances into the generator’s own sockets with suitably rated extension leads, or have an electrician fit a changeover switch so the house circuits can never be connected to the mains and the generator at the same time. Never connect a generator through a wall socket or an improvised lead: power can feed back into the supply and endanger you, your neighbours and people working on the lines. Keep it outdoors and away from doors and windows, never in a garage or closed room, because the exhaust contains carbon monoxide. See portable and inverter generators.

How long can a generator run during a long outage?

A healthy diesel set can run for as long as it has fuel, oil and cooling, with the oil level checked on long runs, but its rating matters: the standby rating on the nameplate is meant for limited hours during occasional outages, while long daily runs should stay within the prime rating. A portable petrol unit has to be stopped and allowed to cool before every refill. See diesel generators for how ratings differ.

Timeline with three lanes: mains, generator and the supply to the load. 1: the mains fails and a start delay ignores brief dips. 2: the generator starts and settles. 3: the load transfers to the generator. 4: the mains returns and a return delay checks it is stable. 5: the load transfers back to the mains. 6: the generator runs unloaded to cool down, then stops.

Questions

Brands, types and sizes

What we work on, from small portables to industrial sets.

Which generator brands do you work on?

We Service & Repair All Generator Brands. That includes complete sets such as FG Wilson, Kipor and Honda, engines from Perkins and Cummins, alternators from Stamford and controllers from Deep Sea and ComAp. The brands page lists the makes we see most.

Do you work on petrol, inverter and gas generators as well as diesel?

Yes. We work on petrol generators, portable and inverter units, gas generators running on LPG or natural gas, and diesel generators of every size.

What sizes of generator do you handle?

From small portable units to large industrial sets: 1 kVA–20,000 kVA capability. Whether a generator runs a few lights during load shedding or a whole factory, the same approach applies: find the fault first, then fix it.

What size generator do I need?

Add up the running load in kW, then allow for the biggest starting surge: the motors in borehole pumps, compressors and air conditioners draw several times their running current as they start. Convert to kVA (most diesel sets are rated at a power factor of 0.8, so 1 kVA gives about 0.8 kW) and leave headroom. The kVA sizing guide works through an example, and single vs three phase explains the supply side.

Diesel or petrol: which is better for load shedding?

For long or frequent outages and bigger loads, diesel: it uses less fuel for each kWh, keeps better than petrol in storage, and diesel engines run longer between overhauls. Petrol suits small, occasional loads and costs less to buy, but stale petrol gums up the carburettor when a unit stands for months. Compare diesel and petrol generators.

Can you repair the controller and the changeover panel, not just the engine?

Yes. Controllers from makers such as Deep Sea, ComAp and SmartGen, their sensors and wiring, and automatic changeover panels are all part of the work. See control panel repairs.

Questions

Areas we cover

Where our technicians work across Gauteng.

Which parts of Gauteng do you cover?

All five regions: Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion, Ekurhuleni on the East Rand, the West Rand and the Vaal Triangle. The service areas page lists the towns in each.

Do you work in estates and complexes with access control?

Yes. When you book, tell us how access works (gate codes, estate security or a site contact) and where the generator stands, whether that is a side passage, a basement plant room or a locked enclosure. It saves time at the gate. See residential generator services.

Can I bring my generator to a workshop?

We work on site rather than from a walk-in workshop. A technician comes to your home or premises anywhere in Gauteng, which suits standby sets that are bolted down and wired in, and saves you moving a heavy portable. About us explains how we work; call 076 434 7292 to book.

Do you work at businesses and industrial sites as well as homes?

Yes. Shops, offices, clinics, restaurants, warehouses and factories all depend on generators. See commercial generator services and industrial generator services for how the work is planned around trading hours and production.

Questions

Costs and quotations

How pricing works. We do not publish prices, because every repair depends on the generator and the fault.

Is there a callout fee?

No. Free callouts and quotations: you do not pay for the technician to come out or for the quotation. Most faults are found on that first visit; if an intermittent fault needs a longer test run to catch it, we explain what that involves before going ahead. See what affects the cost.

How much will my repair cost?

It depends on what the diagnosis finds: the fault, the parts it needs, the size of the generator in kVA, its fuel type, access to the site and how urgently the work is needed. A tripped breaker and burnt alternator windings can both mean no power at the board, at very different costs, which is why we quote after finding the fault. Our repair cost guide explains each factor.

Will you start work before I approve the price?

No. You see the quotation first, and work starts only once you approve it. The same applies to any extra work found along the way.

Do your repairs carry a warranty?

Yes. Our work carries a one-year warranty. Ask us to explain what it covers for your job when you approve the quotation.

Why do quotations for the same job differ between companies?

Usually because they cover different work. Check whether the fault has actually been diagnosed or only guessed, which parts are listed, whether a test under load is included and what warranty applies. A low price for replacing a part that was never faulty is not a saving. See generator repairs for how we diagnose before we quote.
