Boksburg Generator Repairs and Servicing, Done On Site
We repair, service and maintain generators on site across Boksburg: warehouse and workshop sets in Jet Park and Anderbolt, standby for shops around East Rand Mall, and home generators from Parkrand to Vosloorus. On workshop sites we measure what the machines draw before recommending anything, because a set that trips is often overloaded rather than broken.

Who runs generators in Boksburg
Jet Park logistics: Commercial generator services
Warehouses and transport yards near the airport keep dock doors, scanners, lighting and offices running on standby sets with automatic changeover.
Anderbolt workshops and factories: Industrial generator services
Welders, compressors, lathes and presses put heavy, uneven loads on three-phase sets that expose any weakness in the alternator, AVR or governor.
Retail around East Rand Mall: Standby generators
Shops, restaurants and fast-food outlets need tills, card machines, cold rooms and extraction through load shedding and unplanned outages, or they close their doors.
Homes, complexes and townships: Residential generator services
Silent diesel sets in Parkrand and Sunward Park, shared generators in Witfield complexes, and petrol or inverter units in Vosloorus, Reiger Park and Dawn Park.
Industrial loads and voltage
Workshops are hard on generators. A direct-on-line motor on a compressor or extraction fan draws several times its running current for the first seconds, welders pull heavy current in bursts, and variable speed drives draw a distorted current rather than a clean sine wave. All of it lands on the alternator and AVR at once.
On a set close to its limit, the voltage dips as each motor starts, electronic controls reset, contactors drop out and the engine speed sags. A set can cope for years, then start tripping once a second compressor or new machine is added, typically at shift start when everything switches on together.
Drive currents also add heat in the alternator windings, and on a self-excited (shunt) set they distort the supply the AVR takes its own power from, which can leave the voltage unstable. Permanent-magnet (PMG) excitation powers the AVR separately and copes better, which is worth knowing when a set is replaced. Unbalanced single-phase loads add another problem: one phase runs high while another runs low. See single- and three-phase power.
A bigger generator is not always the answer. We measure the load phase by phase while the machines start, check the AVR, governor and protection settings, then advise: stagger the starts, fit soft starters, rebalance the phases, repair the AVR, or resize. Our generator repairs page explains how a visit runs.
Warning signs on a workshop or factory set
| Symptom | Likely causes | Repair route |
|---|---|---|
| Lights dip each time a machine starts | Likely causesMotor starting current near the set’s limit, slow AVR response, a governor slow to recover speed | Repair routeVoltage problems |
| The set trips when two machines start together | Likely causesCombined starting load beyond the set, overcurrent protection set too close, fuel starvation under load | Repair routeShutting down or tripping |
| Engine speed hunts while the welders run | Likely causesGovernor or actuator fault, fuel restriction, rapidly changing load | Repair routeFrequency and speed problems |
| Different voltages on each phase | Likely causesUnbalanced single-phase loads, a loose or failing neutral connection, a stator winding fault | Repair routeSingle vs three phase |
Between outages: checks for shops and complexes
Shop and home sets are rarely pushed as hard as workshop sets, so what catches them out is usually neglect between outages. These checks are safe for an owner or manager.
- Check the fuel level, and top up with clean diesel while the set is stopped, rather than leaving the tank low between outages.
- Keep the canopy clear: no stock, boxes or bins on or against it, so the radiator can breathe and the doors open.
- After each outage, check the controller for alarms or a service-due message, photograph the screen, and make sure it is back in automatic mode.
- Note whether fridges, cold rooms and extraction come back after the changeover, and look under the set for oil, coolant or diesel on the floor.
Anything inside the control panel, the changeover board or the fuel system is a job for a technician. A generator service covers the rest, and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
We are replacing an old workshop generator. What should we look for?
Size it for the machines starting, not just the running total, and allow for welders and drives: an alternator with headroom and PMG excitation copes far better with distorted current. We can measure what the old set actually carries first, so the new one is neither too small nor so large that it runs lightly loaded. See repair or replace and generator installation.
Our generator trips when the welders and compressor start together. Can you help?
Yes. We measure the starting currents, check the AVR, governor and protection settings, and advise on staggered starts, soft starters or a larger set. The kVA sizing guide shows why starting loads matter.
Can you service the generator at our shop without closing during trading hours?
Yes. The shop stays on mains power while we work; only the generator is out of action, for part of the visit, so we pick a time outside your load-shedding slots when a schedule is in force. Tell us your trading hours too; with 24/7 operations, an early or late visit is possible.
Do you cover Vosloorus, Reiger Park and Dawn Park?
Yes, for petrol and inverter units as well as standby sets. Free callouts and quotations. We also cover neighbouring Benoni, Germiston and the rest of Ekurhuleni.
