Repairs

Generator faults we fix in Johannesburg CBD

The usual inner-city call is a set running while the lifts stay stopped: the changeover. Then flat plant-room batteries, dry day tanks, voltage sagging as a lift or pump starts, plant rooms breathing their own hot air, and shop sets on stale fuel.

High-rise blocks

Lifts, booster pumps and the plant room

In Hillbrow and Berea the generator is a building service: water climbs through booster pumps and everyone uses the lifts. A set that cannot take that load leaves the top floors dry; a changeover that never transfers puts the block on the stairs.

The set sits in the basement or on the roof, reached through the building manager or caretaker. We ask for the plant-room key and the hour a transfer test is allowed.

  • Access through the building manager or agent
  • Lift and pump starting loads measured
  • Day tank, transfer pump and float switch checked

Response

On site in the Johannesburg CBD in 1–2 hours

Technicians on site in 1–2 hours, 24/7. Fordsburg and Mayfair lie just west of Newtown and Jeppestown on the eastern side, so a technician comes in from whichever side is moving. Tell us the parking height limit and who signs contractors in.

Meanwhile the safe checks end at fuel level, emergency stop, main breaker and the controller screen; the changeover panel stays shut, and a set that will not catch is left alone rather than cranked flat. Send a photo of the controller and nameplate; emergency generator repair explains a call at night.

Every make

The makes we repair in the inner city

We Service & Repair All Generator Brands. Under the towers that means large diesel sets built around Cummins, Perkins, MTU or Volvo Penta engines with Stamford or Leroy-Somer alternators and DSE or ComAp controllers; in the blocks, canopied FG Wilson, SDMO or Himoinsa sets; behind the shops, Kipor, Bundu Power or Mac Afric silent diesels and Honda-engined petrol portables. See our brand pages.

Prevention

Why inner-city sets fail twice

Inner-city sets come back when the first visit stopped at the symptom: the same charger flattens the new battery, the same float switch empties the day tank, the same lift start trips the set. The job card names what will stop the building next.

Servicing avoids the second call: our Johannesburg CBD generator service and maintenance page covers plant-room and rooftop services and the intervals a month of outages brings forward. Generator repairs shows how a fault is found; we also cover Fordsburg and Mayfair, Parktown and Houghton, City Deep and the rest of Johannesburg.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The lifts in our Hillbrow block stop mid-trip on generator power. What is wrong?

The set is not holding speed and voltage as the lift motors start: a worn governor, a slow AVR or a set too small for the block. We measure the dip under a real lift start; see voltage problems.

Our tower cannot go onto generator power in office hours. Can you still repair the set?

Yes. Diagnosis and most of the repair happen on mains by day; the transfer test that proves it goes into an evening or weekend slot agreed with building management. We work 24/7.

Our shop’s petrol generator will not start after months standing. Can you fix it?

Usually. Stale petrol gums the carburettor and a battery or recoil start fails from standing. We clean the fuel system, refuel and test it behind the shop; see generator won’t start.

A tenant runs a portable generator in the passage. Is that safe?

No. Exhaust in a passage or stairwell is a carbon monoxide risk for the whole floor, and a lead into a wall socket can back-feed the building. Portables run outdoors, away from windows, through a proper lead or fitted changeover.
