Generator Repairs Across Johannesburg Central, from Braamfontein to Mayfair
Johannesburg Central is the inner city, and we repair, service and maintain its generators on site: standby systems under Marshalltown’s towers, the sets behind Hillbrow and Berea’s lifts and water, campus and residence sets in Braamfontein, and the portables and small diesels of traders, kitchens and mosques in Fordsburg and Mayfair. This page compares the parts and points you to the right area page.

Towers, high-rise flats and trading streets
Johannesburg Central is the inner city: the bank and office towers of Marshalltown and the Carlton Centre, Ferreirasdorp and Newtown, Braamfontein with Wits and Constitution Hill, the high-rise flats of Hillbrow and Berea, and Doornfontein, Jeppestown and Maboneng on the eastern side. Just west of Newtown, close to the M1, Fordsburg, Mayfair, Pageview and Vrededorp form a lower, mixed quarter of traders, restaurants, mosques and family homes.
Height decides the generator. In the CBD and Braamfontein a set is part of the building, carrying a tower’s lifts or the pumps that lift a block’s water, behind a locked plant-room door. In Fordsburg and Mayfair it is more often a portable or small diesel behind one shop, kitchen or mosque. Both share the outages: load shedding, and cable or substation faults that last all night.

Across the inner city
Six faults we find from Braamfontein to Mayfair
The set runs, the building stays dark: ATS and changeover problems
The commonest tower and block call: a changeover that will not transfer, through a stiff contactor or lost mains sensing, so the lifts stay stopped.
Batteries flattened by standing: Battery not charging
Mosque sets idle all week and tower sets waiting for an outage rely on a charger nobody watches. When it fails, nothing cranks.
Basements, rooftops and crowded lanes: Overheating
A plant-room radiator breathing its own hot air and a kitchen set boxed in by crates near Mint Road overheat alike: we check airflow first.
Dips when lifts and motors start: Voltage problems
Lifts, booster pumps, extractors and compressors surge on starting; a tired governor or slow AVR lets voltage sag until lifts stall.
Day tanks run dry, cans bring water: Fuel system repairs
Building sets draw from a day tank fed by a transfer pump and float switch; shop and kitchen sets take fuel from cans. Either can fail mid-outage.
Petrol portables on old fuel: Petrol generators
Plaza stalls, shops and flats keep petrol portables for a till or fridge. Months of standing gum the carburettor; we clean, refuel and test on site.
Servicing and maintenance across Johannesburg Central
Routine generator servicing matters wherever the building depends on the set: tower landlords, body corporates and managing agents of blocks with lifts and pumps, Braamfontein’s campuses and residences, clinics, and in Fordsburg and Mayfair the restaurant owner, the trader and the mosque committee. Load shedding brings the date forward, and one long local fault can add a service’s worth of hours in a night.
A maintenance plan fixes those dates and adds test runs between them: one schedule across several towers, body corporate plans proving lifts and pumps, campus visits in the breaks. See the Johannesburg CBD service and maintenance page, the Fordsburg and Mayfair service page, and next door Parktown and Houghton and Auckland Park and Melville.
Reaching the site
On site across Johannesburg Central
The M1 passes Fordsburg and Mayfair, and Park Station sits between Braamfontein and the CBD, so a technician enters from whichever side is clearest. Technicians on site in 1–2 hours, 24/7, including an emergency callout at night.
Access takes longer than the drive: towers want a security sign-in and a tall enough parking entrance, blocks the caretaker with the plant-room key, Plaza shops centre management. Send the make, kVA and a controller photo, so the right parts come for a large diesel generator or a portable.
- Security sign-in and parking height checked
- Plant-room, roof or lane access arranged
- Make, kVA and controller photo sent first

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which page covers Braamfontein, Hillbrow or Pageview?
Braamfontein and Hillbrow are on the Johannesburg CBD pages, which run from Marshalltown to Bertrams. Pageview sits with Fordsburg, Mayfair and Vrededorp on the Fordsburg and Mayfair pages. The table above lists every part.
Do you work on the shared sets in Hillbrow and Berea blocks?
Yes. They keep lifts moving and water reaching the upper floors, so we measure lift and pump starts against the rating, prove the changeover and report to the managing agent or body corporate; see residential generator services.
We own a Marshalltown building and a Fordsburg shop. Can one plan cover both?
Yes. One plan puts every set on a single schedule, each dated by its own hour meter: the building serviced after hours, the shop before trading. See commercial generator services.
A substation fault has our block on the generator overnight. What should we do?
Watch the fuel level and the controller screen, and leave the changeover and fuel system to a technician. If the set stops, check the emergency stop and main breaker, then call us. Never run a portable in a stairwell or plug one into a wall socket.
Is the callout free, and which makes do you repair in the inner city?
Free callouts and quotations: nothing is done until you accept the quotation. We Service & Repair All Generator Brands, from an inverter unit at a Plaza stall or a petrol portable in a Hillbrow flat to the diesel standby systems under Marshalltown’s towers.
