Routine servicing in Auckland Park and Melville

Servicing

What a generator service in Auckland Park and Melville includes

Services here happen in side passages and restaurant yards as often as plant rooms, so each visit is booked for the hour the site can spare, with clearance, exhaust runs and greasy radiators getting attention a garden set never needs.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a set here needs a service

The manual gives the interval in hours and months, and the first reached wins: a month of back-to-back slots on 7th Street uses hours a house set takes two years to gain.
How often a set here needs a service
The setHow it runs hereWhen the next service falls due
Campus or studio systemHow it runs hereEvery outage, lightly loaded after hoursWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a heavy term, plus a loaded run
Medical-room setHow it runs hereEvery outage in consulting hours, small loadWhen the next service falls dueYearly at least, fridge supply proved
Restaurant or guesthouse setHow it runs hereEvery evening slot under the kitchenWhen the next service falls dueBy hours: a bad month brings it forward
House or student-block setHow it runs hereA few outages a month and a weekly testWhen the next service falls dueBy the calendar: battery, diesel and changeover age anyway

Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; wet stacking explains light running.

Two examples. A prime power set that runs every day reaches its running-hours interval first. A standby set that only runs on test barely gains hours, so the time interval is reached first. Intervals come from the engine manual, by hours and at least once a year.

Prevention

What a service here catches before the outage does

Nearly every breakdown here showed itself first at a service: a charger whose output was never metered, a side-passage radiator closed up with grease and dust, a guesthouse tank with water under the diesel, a changeover that hesitated when cycled on live mains and was written up rather than found by a dark dining room.

If the set has already stopped, our Auckland Park and Melville generator repairs page covers the faults behind most callouts here. The same plans run in the Johannesburg CBD, Parktown and Houghton and Industria and Crown Mines, across Johannesburg and on our service index.

  • Charger output metered at the battery
  • Radiator and clearance checked in passages
  • Changeover cycled on live mains

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service our Melville guesthouse’s generator without waking guests?

Yes. Oil, filters, coolant and battery work are quiet, the test run is booked mid-morning after check-out, and the night start is proved from the controller’s log. We work 24/7.

Our student block’s set only carries the gate and passage lights. Does that matter?

Yes. Hours at a tenth of its rating leave a diesel cold, and unburnt fuel collects in the exhaust and injectors. Each service runs it under enough load to clear that; see wet stacking.

How often should a medical-room set that runs only during outages be serviced?

Once a year at least, or sooner when the hour meter catches the manual’s figure: two slots a day through a bad month adds up.

Our restaurant keeps diesel in containers behind the kitchen. Does that change the service?

Yes. Stored diesel picks up water and dirt, so the visit samples it, drains the tank and looks harder at the filters; see diesel fuel contamination.
