We service and maintain every kind of generator Parktown and Houghton runs: Killarney block sets that must bring lifts and pumps back every outage, standby sets at the medical suites, offices and campuses, and home sets on Houghton’s big stands that run a few times a year, each visit written up.

Servicing

What a generator service in Parktown and Houghton includes

A service here is as much about access as oil: a Killarney plant room opened by the caretaker, a suite that cannot lose its fridges in consulting hours, a Houghton home where someone must be in. Standing fuel and sulphated batteries get extra attention.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

When a Parktown or Houghton generator is due

Hours or months, whichever the manual reaches first, fix the date, and duty here changes street by street: a Killarney block set runs every slot, a Houghton home set a few times a year.
When a Parktown or Houghton generator is due
The setHow it runs hereWhen the next service falls due
Killarney block setHow it runs hereEvery outage, under lifts, pumps and lightingWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a heavy quarter, yearly otherwise
Medical suite or clinic setHow it runs hereEvery consulting-hours slot, lightly loadedWhen the next service falls dueYearly, with a run under proper load
Office or campus set with a UPSHow it runs hereEvery office-hours outage, lightly loaded after fiveWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a bad month, frequency and voltage logged
Home set on a Houghton standHow it runs hereIdle for months, then a long evening under the whole houseWhen the next service falls dueYearly: battery plates, diesel and contactor deteriorate unused

Our service intervals guide dates the next visit from the hour meter; diesel fuel contamination explains what a year in a tank does.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Prevention

What a service here catches first

Few breakdowns in these suburbs arrive unannounced. A block battery that will not crank was overcharged for months; a Houghton tank that stalls the engine has carried water since the last storm; a contactor that leaves a suite dark was slow on the previous test. A service reads those signs while there is still time.

Once a set has stopped, our Parktown and Houghton generator repairs page takes over. The plans above also run in Rosebank, Auckland Park and Melville and the Johannesburg CBD, and across Johannesburg.

  • Charger output checked against the battery
  • Water drawn off the bottom of the tank
  • Contactors timed on a live-mains transfer

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service our Killarney block’s generator without stopping the lifts?

Yes. The engine work needs the set stopped, not the building, so the block stays on mains. The lifts ride on the generator only for the transfer test, at an hour the caretaker picks.

Our suite cannot lose its vaccine fridge. When do you test the generator?

Before the first patient or after the last, and only for the minutes the transfer takes, with the voltage watched throughout. We work 24/7.

Our Houghton set runs a few hours a year. What is there to service?

More than the oil. A standing set sulphates its battery, collects water in the tank and lets the changeover seize, and the hour meter shows none of it; the yearly visit tests all three.

Why does our office generator smoke after a night carrying only the server room?

Because it ran cold. Under a small load a diesel never reaches working temperature, and unburnt fuel coats the injectors and exhaust. The loaded run at each service burns it off; see wet stacking.
