Servicing

What a generator service in Northcliff includes

Most Northcliff services are home visits to a set on a terrace or in a side passage below the house, so the drain pan goes down the steps with us and the radiator and exhaust run against the wall get a closer look.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a Northcliff generator needs a service

A service falls due by running hours or by the calendar, whichever the engine manual reaches first; in Northcliff the use decides which, and a cable fault can run a set far longer than any schedule says.
How often a Northcliff generator needs a service
The setHow it runsNext service due
Home standby set on the hillHow it runsA few outages a month and a weekly test runNext service dueBy the calendar: yearly at least, battery and fuel first
Restaurant set in Linden or GreensideHow it runsEvery evening slot through dinner serviceNext service dueBy hours: a month of slots can use the interval
Centre set at CrestaHow it runsEvery trading-hours outage, lightly loaded after closeNext service dueBy hours in a heavy spell, otherwise yearly
School or consulting-room setHow it runsA few hours a month, more in a long outageNext service dueYearly, before term or the summer storms

Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; diesel fuel contamination explains standing diesel.

Two examples. A prime power set that runs every day reaches its running-hours interval first. A standby set that only runs on test barely gains hours, so the time interval is reached first. Intervals come from the engine manual, by hours and at least once a year.

Prevention

What a Northcliff service catches before the outage does

Most Northcliff repairs give notice. A drifting charger is metered before it ruins the battery, water under a home tank’s diesel is drained before the lift pump reaches it, stale restaurant petrol is replaced before it gums the carburettor, and the changeover is cycled on live mains so a sticking contactor goes on the report, not into a dark house.

If the set has already stopped, our Northcliff generator repairs page covers the faults we fix on the hill and behind the restaurants. We run the same plans in Randburg, Rosebank and Auckland Park and Melville and across the Randburg hub.

  • Charger output metered at the battery
  • Home tanks drained of water, restaurant petrol replaced
  • Changeover cycled before the mains drops

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our Emmarentia set runs a few hours a month. What wears out if nothing much runs?

The parts that age by time: the battery under a charger nobody checks, condensation under the diesel, hoses that harden and a changeover that never moves. A yearly service and monthly test runs cover them.

Can you service the generator behind our Greenside restaurant before we open?

Yes. We work 24/7, so oil, filters and fuel work happen before the kitchen opens and the loaded run and changeover test finish before the first table.

Our generator stands on a terrace below the house. Does that change the service?

Only the logistics. The drained oil goes into a pan we carry up, and we spend longer on the radiator, fan and exhaust run, because a set in still air behind a wall is the one that overheats.

When should a school generator be serviced?

At the end of the long holidays, before term, with a run under the office and kitchen load, and a check after any month of back-to-back slots.
