Servicing

What a generator service in Kensington and Bruma includes

A service here is as likely to happen in a restaurant’s back yard or on a workshop forecourt as in a garden, so it is booked for a quiet hour, and petrol portables get the carburettor and stale-fuel attention a diesel never needs.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a Kensington and Bruma generator needs servicing

The engine manual gives the interval in hours and months and the first to arrive wins; here the set’s duty decides which, and an all-night cable fault counts like a slot.
How often a Kensington and Bruma generator needs servicing
The setHow it runs hereWhen the next service falls due
Restaurant or supermarket setHow it runs hereEvery trading-hours slot, under fridgesWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a heavy month; portables sooner, by the oil
Workshop set on Jules StreetHow it runs hereEvery daytime slot, near full load, in dustWhen the next service falls dueBy hours, often within a quarter
Shared flat-block setHow it runs hereEvery outage, under a light loadWhen the next service falls dueYearly at least, with a loaded run against wet stacking
House, church or school setHow it runs hereA few outages a year, plus test runsWhen the next service falls dueYearly, as battery, fuel and changeover age anyway

Our service intervals guide turns the hour meter into a date; wet stacking explains light running.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Illustration only: actual hours depend on the schedule, area and load.

Prevention

What a service here catches before the outage does

Most repairs here announce themselves early. A charger metered at the battery shows drift before the flat-block set fails to crank; a side-passage set with boxes on its canopy is cleared before it overheats; and the changeover is cycled on live mains, so a hesitant contactor is written up, not found by a dark kitchen.

If the set has already stopped, our Kensington and Bruma generator repairs page covers the faults we fix behind the restaurants, along Jules Street and at the older houses. The same plans run in the Johannesburg CBD, Norwood and Orange Grove and City Deep, across Johannesburg and in the full list of areas.

  • Petrol checked for age, carburettor cleaned
  • Drum diesel sampled for water
  • Air inlets and canopy cleared before summer

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a petrol portable behind a restaurant need servicing like a diesel?

Yes, and sooner: a small petrol engine uses its oil fast and petrol left in it goes stale within weeks. The service changes the oil, cleans the carburettor and checks the stored fuel.

Can you service our Jules Street workshop set without stopping work?

Mostly. Oil, filters, fuel and battery are done on mains; only the loaded run and changeover test touch the floor, booked for a lunch break or after knock-off, 24/7 if need be.

We store things on the generator in our side passage. Does that matter?

Yes. The canopy’s air inlets and exhaust outlet must stay clear; boxes and bins make it run hot and can push exhaust towards a window.

How often does a set that runs a few times a year need servicing?

Yearly at least, with monthly test runs between. An idle set fails for idle reasons: a battery never properly charged, water under the diesel, a changeover that has not moved for months.
