Generator Service & Maintenance in City Deep, Booked Around the Shift

We service and maintain generators across City Deep, Denver, Cleveland and Benrose: cold-store and warehouse sets that run every slot under refrigeration, yard sets at the container and transport depots, and factory sets that must start the biggest motor on the floor. Each visit is booked around the shift and recorded.

Routine servicing in City Deep

Servicing

What a generator service in City Deep includes

Servicing in City Deep means a truck yard or plant room, an induction where the yard requires one, and the hour the floor can spare; bulk fuel, yard dust and phase balance get more of that hour than the oil does.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a City Deep generator needs servicing

Hours or months, whichever the manual reaches first, books the service; in City Deep the hours usually win, because refrigeration loads the set every slot.
How often a City Deep generator needs servicing
The setHow it runs in City DeepWhen the next service falls due
Cold-store or warehouse setHow it runs in City DeepEvery slot in full, under refrigeration, for weeks on endWhen the next service falls dueBy hours: a month of back-to-back outages uses the whole interval
Container or transport yard setHow it runs in City DeepIdle in dust for days, then all night under floodlightsWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a bad month, otherwise yearly
Factory or engineering setHow it runs in City DeepDaytime slots under motor loads, lightly loaded after the shiftWhen the next service falls dueBy hours in a heavy quarter, with a loaded run each service
Workshop or Benrose unit setHow it runs in City DeepA few hours a week, well under its ratingWhen the next service falls dueYearly at least, watched for wet stacking

Our service intervals guide works the date out from the meter; wet stacking covers under-loaded diesels.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Illustration only: actual hours depend on the schedule, area and load.

Prevention

The faults a City Deep service finds first

Most of what we repair in City Deep was weeks in the making: water under a bulk tank’s diesel is drained before the lift pump reaches it, a radiator half-packed with yard dust is cleared ahead of the first hot afternoon, and a changeover that transfers slowly on test is reported before a cold store goes dark.

When a set is already down, the City Deep generator repairs page explains what fails most at the cold stores, yards and factories. We run the same plans in the Johannesburg CBD and Kensington and Bruma, across Johannesburg and in every area we cover.

  • Bulk-tank water drained first
  • Radiator cores cleared of yard dust
  • Load run under the compressors

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you service our cold store’s generator while we are receiving stock?

Mostly. Receiving carries on while we work on the engine with the store on mains; the compressors feel only the transfer test and the loaded run, booked for whichever gap between deliveries suits, 24/7.

Our transport yard inducts every contractor. Does that slow the service?

Not if we know in advance. Send the induction and permit requirements with the booking; we come with the permits sorted and keep the set isolated until the transfer test.

How many hours does a month of load shedding put on a cold-store set?

Three slots a day for a month can add a couple of hundred hours, more than many manuals allow between oil changes, so the meter reading after a heavy month sets the date.

Our produce cold room’s set only runs during outages. Is a yearly service enough?

Yes, provided fuel and battery are checked between. A standing set is ageing, not resting: water settles under the diesel, a drifting charger starves the battery and an idle changeover sticks.
