Routine servicing in Soweto

Four kinds of Soweto site, each wearing a set out differently.

Servicing

What a generator service in Soweto includes

On a small Soweto set the service centres on oil, air filter and fuel: sumps are small, the dry months bring dust, and petrol bought for one outage is often still in the tank at the next.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

How often a Soweto generator should be serviced

A service falls due by hours or months, whichever comes first, at the engine manual’s interval. In much of Soweto the Eskom load-shedding stage sets how fast the hours come; higher stages bring the next service forward.
How often a Soweto generator should be serviced
The setHow it runs hereWhat brings the service forward
Home petrol or inverter portableHow it runs hereMost evenings during load sheddingWhat brings the service forwardHours: a small sump means short oil intervals, so keep a log
Shop or tavern dieselHow it runs hereHours at a time, carrying fridges and soundWhat brings the service forwardHours in a heavy month; air filter checked between
Church, school or crèche setHow it runs hereA few times a term, then storedWhat brings the service forwardThe calendar: fuel and battery age while it stands
Clinic or mall standby setHow it runs hereEvery outage, often for hoursWhat brings the service forwardHours under higher stages, plus runs under load

Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; stale and dirty fuel explains what weeks in a tank do.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Prevention

Faults a Soweto service finds before load shedding does

Most Soweto breakdowns give warning. A low sump is topped up before the engine starves, gummy petrol drained before it blocks the jets, a clogged air filter changed before the engine runs rich and smokes, and worn brushes or a weak capacitor show on a meter before the sockets die.

If the set has already stopped, our Soweto generator repairs page covers the usual faults and what to send. The same servicing runs in Roodepoort, Lenasia and Eldorado Park, and throughout our Johannesburg region.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How often should I service the petrol generator I run every evening?

By running hours, not the calendar. A set used through every load-shedding slot reaches the manual’s hours long before its date, so it may need several services a year. Keep a simple log.

Our church generator only runs a few times a year. Does it still need a service?

Yes, yearly at least. Standing ages a set: petrol goes stale, the battery goes flat and seals dry out. The service drains old fuel and proves the set carries the sound and lights.

Can you service the generator at my tavern without closing during trading hours?

Yes. We book the visit before you open, and the set is off duty only while we work. Tell us what it carries so the load test matches.

Can you put the clinic’s standby generator on a regular maintenance plan?

Yes: services by hours or months, monthly runs under load, battery and charger checks, and a record of each visit. We work 24/7, so tests fit around the clinic.
