Who needs it

Routine servicing in Lenasia: who needs it

Servicing

What a generator service in Lenasia includes

A Lenasia service is often timed around a building’s calendar: before a festival, a function or the school term, with closer attention to batteries and tank water on seldom-run sets and to drum diesel on the holdings.

  • Engine oil and filter, with the fuel, air and water-separator filters
  • Coolant level and condition, radiator, hoses and belts
  • Starting battery load-tested, charger output and terminals checked
  • Fuel system checked for leaks, water and contamination, tank to injectors
  • Alternator, AVR, output connections and earthing checked
  • Controller settings, alarms and hour meter recorded
  • Test run under load: voltage, frequency and temperatures
  • Changeover (ATS) operation confirmed where fitted

You get a written record of what was done and found. The full list is in our service checklist; generator servicing explains the work and a maintenance plan keeps it on schedule.

Intervals

When a Lenasia generator is due a service

The engine manual sets the interval in hours and months, and whichever arrives first decides. A Lenasia workshop diesel can reach its hours in weeks of load shedding; a hall set reaches its date first.
When a Lenasia generator is due a service
The setHow it runsWhat brings the service forward
Hall, mosque or temple setHow it runsSeldom, then at full loadWhat brings the service forwardThe calendar; a service before each busy season
School or madrassa setHow it runsSchool-day outages, idle in holidaysWhat brings the service forwardThe calendar, booked in a holiday
Home standby set or portableHow it runsOutages and a weekly testWhat brings the service forwardThe calendar, unless a heavy month adds the hours
Shop, workshop or holding dieselHow it runsEvery outage, under motor loadsWhat brings the service forwardThe hour meter, often within a few months

Our service intervals guide reads the hour meter against the manual; diesel fuel contamination explains water in drums and tanks.

Illustration of one day with two power cuts of two and a half hours each, at 06:00 and 18:00, while the generator runs. That is 5 running hours a day, about 35 a week and about 150 a month, and 2 starts and changeovers a day, 14 a week and about 60 a month. A service measured in running hours falls due in months rather than a year, and every start works the battery, charger, starter and changeover. Illustration only: actual hours depend on the schedule, area and load.

Prevention

Faults a Lenasia service finds before the outage does

Most Lenasia breakdowns were visible at a service. A charger at the wrong voltage shows on a meter before it ruins a hall’s battery; water drained from a holding’s drum never reaches the injectors; a changeover cycled on live mains puts a slow contactor on the report, not in a dark shop.

When a set has already stopped, our Lenasia generator repairs page covers the faults behind most callouts here and what to send before we arrive. We also service generators in Soweto, Eldorado Park and Orange Farm, and across the Johannesburg area hub.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Our temple’s generator ran twice last year. Does it still need a service?

Yes, at least yearly. A standing set loses battery capacity, gathers condensation in its tank and hardens its hoses, and an unused changeover can stick. A service before the busy season proves it.

Can you service a mosque or hall generator around prayer times and functions?

Yes. Tell us the times the building is in use and we book around them; we work 24/7. Only the test under load moves the building onto the generator, so that is done when it is quiet.

When should a school in Lenasia book its generator service?

In the holidays, so the work and changeover test happen while classrooms are empty. The set starts the term with a tested battery, clean fuel and a record for the governing body.

We keep diesel in drums on our Ennerdale holding. Does that affect the generator?

It can. Drums gather water and dirt, which block filters and wear injectors. A service samples the drums and the base tank, drains any water and replaces the filters; keep drums sealed, upright and out of the sun.

Do you service small portable generators at homes in Lenasia and Lehae?

Yes: oil, air filter and spark plug, stale fuel drained and the carburettor cleaned, pull-start and sockets checked. We also explain safe use: outdoors, away from windows, and never plugged into a wall socket.
